Yesterday I was in conversation with James Ross on Radio Television Hong Kong’s Radio 3.

It was Lunar New Year. Year of the Horse. Energy. Momentum. Forward motion.

James had been playing James Bond theme songs all afternoon. Two full hours of them. Shirley Bassey. Paul McCartney. Adele. That unmistakable orchestral build that tells you something dramatic is about to happen.

In the middle of that, he asked me a simple question.

What have the Bond films told us about the future?

It sounds light. Cultural. Almost nostalgic.

It isn’t.

Before we go any further, for those celebrating: Sun Nin Fai Lok. Gong Hei Fat Choi. Wishing you health, resilience and prosperity in the Year of the Horse. Not a bad year to take the reins on a few things.

Now back to Bond.

Because as the music rolled through the studio, something struck me.

Bond is not really about martinis, cars or casinos.

Bond is about fear.

And fear moves.

The Villain Had a Flag

In the early Bond films, the villain had a flag.

Dr No. From Russia With Love. Goldfinger.

Cold War tension. Nuclear sabotage. Superpower brinkmanship.

The threat was geopolitical. It wore a uniform. It belonged to a nation. The world felt binary. Us and them. East and West. Clear sides.

The anxiety of the 1960s was existential and visible. We were afraid of mushroom clouds and red buttons.

Bond did not invent that fear. He dramatised it.

But then the villain moved.

From Nations to Elite Madmen

By the 1970s, we saw something slightly different.

The Spy Who Loved Me. Moonraker.

Space stations. Global annihilation plots. Megalomaniacs with grand visions of resetting civilisation.

The threat expanded from nations to powerful individuals.

The anxiety shifted from geopolitics to existential fragility.

Again, Bond did not predict it. He reflected it.

And reflection matters, because it reveals what we are prepared to imagine.

Corporate Power and the Rise of the Insider

The real shift began in the 1980s and 1990s.

In A View to a Kill, the villain was not a general. He was a tech entrepreneur attempting to destroy Silicon Valley competitors.

In GoldenEye, a satellite EMP weapon targeted financial systems. The villain was a former insider.

That is a profound psychological shift.

The threat moved from missiles to money.
From borders to systems.
From nations to networks.

By the time we reached Skyfall, the villain was a disgruntled cyber operative exposing intelligence agents through data leaks.

In Spectre, the danger was mass surveillance infrastructure itself.

The scariest weapon was no longer a bomb.

It was a server.

And the person behind it had once helped build the system.

That detail matters.

Because it mirrors our lived reality.

Today we do not primarily fear invasion.

We fear systemic failure.
We fear exposure.
We fear what happens when trust collapses inside institutions we depend on.

For leaders, that is not cinema. That is operational reality.

From Geography to Biology

Then came No Time To Die.

A DNA-targeted bioweapon.

Not a dramatic global explosion.

A personalised threat. Precision. Invisible. Intimate.

We moved from geography to biology.

From “which country” to “which code”.

From mass destruction to targeted vulnerability.

Step back and the arc is unmistakable.

The villain moved.

From nations.
To elite individuals.
To corporations.
To insiders.
To systems.
To biology.

And if Bond continues to mirror the cultural imagination, the next shift is obvious.

Artificial intelligence.
Autonomous systems.
Deepfake identity manipulation.
Quantum computing.
Climate engineering.
Space-based infrastructure.

The next Bond villain may not want to destroy the world.

He may want to reprogram it.

The Gadgets Were Never the Point

People love the gadgets.

The Aston Martin with defensive systems.
The multi-function watch with hidden trackers.
The invisible car.

But here is what fascinates me.

Bond did not invent technology.

He extended existing technology just far enough to make it feel plausible.

The intelligent car that felt extraordinary in the 1960s now looks quaint compared to the software running inside most modern vehicles.

The Bond watch that once seemed futuristic is now outperformed by what billions of people wear on their wrists every day.

Bond normalised the future.

He made advanced technology feel elegant rather than threatening.

That is not trivial.

Popular culture prepares us emotionally before technology fully arrives.

And innovation is not only technical. It is psychological.

When we feel ready, we build faster.

Culture as Preparation

On air, we also touched on something that often goes unnoticed.

Shared experience.

For decades, cinema shaped global culture at scale. American film in particular projected values, aspiration and power narratives around the world.

Bond, although British in origin, became part of that machinery.

We saw shifts in gender representation over time. Early films were overwhelmingly male-dominated. Over the last 15 years, stronger female roles and more complex character arcs became normalised.

Culture moved.

Policy and corporate structures followed.

That is not accidental.

Culture is rehearsal.

Story allows us to explore futures safely before we experience them for real.

And that is precisely why I pay attention to it.

The Optimism Hidden in the Chaos

Here is the part that matters most to me.

Despite escalating complexity, Bond still wins.

The hero adapts.
The system recalibrates.
Society survives.

Yes, the threat becomes more sophisticated. Yes, the tools become more powerful. Yes, the risk becomes more intimate.

But adaptation keeps pace.

In a world saturated with dystopian narratives about AI takeover, machine dominance and irreversible collapse, that subtle optimism matters.

Bond is not naive.

He walks into chaos.

But he evolves with it.

That is the deeper lesson.

Not fear.

Adaptation.

Why This Matters Beyond Film

You might reasonably ask why any of this matters outside a Hong Kong radio studio during Lunar New Year.

It matters because these cultural reflections are signals.

I am heard weekly on Radio Television Hong Kong’s Radio 3 and regularly across other media platforms each year, not because I comment on pop culture, but because I interpret what these shifts reveal about where anxiety is relocating.

The villain moving from flags to code is not entertainment trivia.

It tells us where collective concern sits.

It tells us what people believe could destabilise their world.

And leaders who ignore that emotional undercurrent often find themselves reacting too late.

If the threat is systemic, resilience must be systemic.
If the threat is invisible, trust must be intentional.
If the threat is technological, governance must be proactive.

We are not predicting catastrophe.

We are preparing for context.

The Year of the Horse

The Year of the Horse symbolises energy, independence and forward movement.

Bond has been running since 1962. The world has changed dramatically in that time. The villains have evolved. The technology has accelerated. The audience has shifted.

But the story continues.

So do we.

We can’t predict the next Bond villain.

But we can prepare for what that choice will reveal about us.
