{+ Podcast} Legacy Isn’t What You Leave Behind—It’s What You Build for the Future
Fifteen years ago, I stood in front of a room full of business leaders, delivering a session on future-proofing.
Last week, I was invited back by the same client—different room, different stage of life, same fundamental question: What does the future look like, and how do we make sure we stay relevant to it?
This time, the room wasn’t full of active CEOs running businesses.
It was a curated group of former CEOs—business leaders who had built, scaled, and eventually sold or transitioned their multi million dollar companies.
They weren’t there to talk about operations, growth hacks, or sales strategies.
They were there to explore what’s next.
Not for their businesses, but for themselves and those who come after them.
I called the session Beyond Legacy: Grandchildren and the World of 2040.
But it wasn’t about grandchildren per se—it was about the future they’ll inhabit and how today’s leaders can shape it in ways that matter.
We’ve Been Here Before, and We’ll Be Here Again.
This was one of the big takeaways from the conversation.
There is always a ‘new future’ emerging.
Every generation sees change and believes their moment in history is unprecedented.
But history teaches us that shifts in technology, economy, influence, and human behaviour are constants.
Right now, we’re caught up in conversations about AI, global instability, longevity, environmental tipping points, decentralised influence, and the evolution of work.
It’s easy to feel like we’re teetering on the edge of something massive.
And we are.
But if history has taught us anything, it’s that the world doesn’t end.
It reinvents itself.
So the real question is, what are you going to do with that knowledge?
Legacy is More Than Money—It’s the Future You Make Possible.
The idea of legacy is often framed as wealth—what we financially leave behind.
But in truth, wealth is only one small part of it.
We explored five forms of legacy that will matter more than ever in the future:
- Wealth – Yes, financial resources are important, but how they are structured and transferred will change dramatically in the coming decades. Think beyond bank accounts to new economic models, decentralised finance, and impact-driven capital.
- Knowledge – The wisdom we pass on is what shapes how future generations make decisions. The challenge is ensuring that the knowledge we share is relevant to their world, not just ours.
- Values – The guiding principles that shape decision-making, relationships, and resilience. What values will stand the test of time? What values need to evolve?
- Influence – We are shifting into an era where power is no longer concentrated in governments and institutions but in networks and communities. Who we influence—and how—will determine the impact we have beyond our own lifespan.
- Adaptability – Perhaps the greatest legacy of all: the ability to embrace change, navigate uncertainty, and help others do the same. The next generation doesn’t need our rigid beliefs; they need our frameworks for thinking and decision-making.
Reframing the Conversation: In Your Day, Not In My Day.
One of the biggest traps when thinking about legacy is framing it in the past.
The “in my day” stories of how things used to be.
But what if we flipped it?
What if, instead of reminiscing about how things were, we looked ahead and said: In your day, this will be the reality. How can I help prepare you for that?
This is where the real shift happens.
Legacy is not about nostalgia; it’s about preparation.
It’s about taking the wisdom we’ve gathered and applying it to a world that is fundamentally different from the one we built our own success in.
2040: A Different Playing Field
We explored some of the biggest shifts coming in the next two decades:
- The rise and fall of industries, including the automation of once-stable career paths and the emergence of entirely new economic models.
- The influence of AI—not as a replacement for human thinking but as an accelerant of human creativity and strategic capability.
- The decentralisation of power, where individuals, creators, and communities hold more influence than traditional governments or corporations.
- The collision of biotech, quantum computing, and environmental innovation, fundamentally changing how we live, work, and structure societies.
And then we asked: When your grandchild is wildly successful in 2040, what’s the one thing they did differently from you?
Building Legacy in Action
The participants weren’t just passive listeners; they built scenarios, debated shifts, and ultimately designed a future business as if they were launching it from their garage in 2040.
This exercise forced them to step beyond their assumptions and into the shoes of a future generation.
One participant reflected:
“It’s uplifting to imagine the optimistic scenarios that could be—when we focus on what’s possible, not just what’s being predicted.”
Another said:
“This session shifted my thinking about how we prepare the next generation for what’s coming.”
This wasn’t just about them—it’s the same challenge for all of us.
What’s Next for You?
Legacy isn’t passive.
It’s something we actively build, shape, and adjust.
So, here are three questions to consider:
- What knowledge, wisdom, or frameworks are you actively passing down? Are they future-relevant?
- Who are you influencing, and how? Influence today looks different from how it did when you built your career. Are you adapting?
- Are you making decisions today that future-you—and future generations—will thank you for?
This isn’t about guessing the future. It’s about being intentional in how we prepare for it.
The Conversation Continues.
This session wasn’t a one-off.
It was a deep, strategic, and highly tailored conversation—one that this group wanted to have and one that businesses, leadership teams, and advisory boards need to have.
If you want to bring this level of thinking to your organisation, I’d love to have that conversation with you.
Let’s build the future together.
